The news is buzzing about the many Parade of Homes that will soon dot areas all over the country. It won't be long now before the summer Parades begin and we'll all be scouring the many beautifully decorated homes for ideas and interest. If parading around the annual showcase of new, high-end and designer homes is appealing to you, watch for these 2016 trends:
Splashy Kitchen Backsplashes
With so many options available from traditional tile to trendy glass, and shinny metals to rustic woods, kitchen backsplashes no longer simply protect the walls from spills and splatters, they've become the focal point of today's kitchens. We're likely to see a variety of ideas and styles for unique backsplashes.
The backsplash in the kitchen above is Ann Sacks Beau Monde Glass Polly Tiles in Absolute White and Pearl. It's the same tile in kitchen below, color unknown. On a personal note, while this glass tile is beautiful, it comes with a hefty price tag so if cost is prohibitive, you may need to look for a different avenue or look for ideas to use it in smaller quantities.
Bold Statement Tile
We'll be seeing a variety of unique and bold ideas using tile, from bold statement tile floors,,,
...to highlight tiled walls.
Wall tile isn't limited to a backsplash anymore. It's replacing paint and wallpaper as a popular look in 2016. We should see many creative ideas used both on floors and walls. This bathroom features Rue Pierre wall tiles by Walker Zanger - Antique Blanc Marble.
Wood-look tile has already been established as a favorite, but expect designers to get inventive using wood-look tile with so many new and improved looks released from the industry. Among those, tiles that replicate the look of reclaimed wood, painted wood, and cross grain. The wood-like flooring selected for this bathroom is a 30"x 30" tile from AKDO, by Martha O'Hara Interiors (via Home Bunch).
Encaustic Cement Tile
One of the hottest trends to come back into style is encaustic cement tile. You will likely see encaustic tiles everywhere during the Parade of Homes, however, they are not cheap. Encaustic tiles are handmade ceramic tiles in which the pattern or design on the surface is not a product of the glaze, but of different colors of clay. They are usually made of two colors but a tile may be composed of as many as six.
Gold, Gold, Gold
From accessories, to lighting, fixtures, knobs and hardware, gold is making a comeback and we're sure to see plenty in the Parade of Homes this year. The gold finishes we'll be seeing are more muted with a bronzed tint than the gold of the past.
This bathroom brass faucet is from Newport Brass and the finish is Forever Brass.
Black Stainless Finishes
One of the hot trends we were expecting to see in 2016 is black stainless finishes. I will be watching to see if it's incorporated in the Parade of Homes this year in tile and appliances. As far as appliances, so far I've only seen it in test kitchens. We'll see what happens to this trend.
Speaking of "trends," it's fun, inspiring and interesting to see all of the new products roll out and the creative ways they are incorporated into design, but there is something important to keep in mind. There is a big difference between "trendy" and "trending." It sounds like minor semantics, but in the world of home design, it's important.
Trendy is a moment in time. It can be here this season and gone the next.
Trending, however, is taking part in a much wider and lasting movement.
When we make big decisions for our home, such as flooring and appliances, we don't want to make a decision based on what is trendy. Rather, we want to make a decision by what will have lasting appeal.
On a personal note, the ideas that I share are intended to inspire you and give you information and ideas that you can take and add your own personal flair. If you love something, that is what is important. Not whether it is the "hottest trend" out there. Trust your instincts!
Have a great day!
